Colosseum - The New Seven Wonders of the World

Built in the center of the city of Rome, Italy this great work of architecture was initially called the Flavian amphitheater. The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheater. Construction of the Colosseum started between 70 and 72 AD under Emperor Vespasian's rule and it was completed in 80 AD under Titus rule. The Roman name of Amphitheatrum Flavium is derived from Vespasian's and Titus' family name. The name Colosseum was said to be derived from the statue of Nero.

The Colosseum was in use till late 6th century for nearly 500 years. Gladiatorial contests, public spectacles like mock sea fights, dramas based on classical mythology, re-enactment of famous battles were held there. The Colosseum had a seating capacity of 50,000 spectators.

Rome has now become synonymous with Colosseum . It has gained an iconic status. Though most of the structure is destroyed by earthquakes, it still has connections with the Roman Catholic Church, each Good Friday the Pope takes a torchlit procession to the amphitheatre and it is still one of the major tourist attractions of Rome. The Five-Euro cent coin has the Colosseum depicted on it.

The Colosseum was the Empire's primary stage for gladiatorial combat for nearly 4 centuries. In a show of Rome's wealth and extravagance, during the opening ceremonies in 80 AD, 100 days of the games were held.

Castel Sant'Angelo: The building was originally constructed by the Emperor Hadrian between 123 and 139AD to serve as his mausoleum.

Rome Zoo: Rome's Zoo is located in the Villa Borghese park area, on Viale del Giardino Zoologico.

Roman Houses, the Celio: On the Celio hill, the Roman Houses (Case Romane) have recently been restored and re-opened to the public, along with a room displaying archaeological finds.

Capitoline Museums: The Capitoline Museums are home to some of the most renowned and beautiful statues the world has ever known.

Museo di Roma: Palazzo Braschi is a lavish palazzo overlooking Piazza Navona, which is now home to the Museum of Rome.
